In the last 20+ years, cosmetic injectables have exploded in popularity. What was once only achievable with plastic surgery can often be accomplished with a quick injection. Botox and other neuromodulators can refresh the face and even slow lines and wrinkles from forming. Fillers can plump lips, reshape facial features, and rejuvenate the face. While these injections are wonderful and require no downtime, there are some rules you should follow to get the best results from your cosmetic injectables.
No Touching!
The first rule of cosmetic injections is to not touch the treatment area after your procedure. Neuromodulators like Botox can be displaced to the wrong areas if you rub or push on the skin – Botox is not reversible, and you do not want the wrong muscles relaxed for 3-4 months. Fillers can also be affected by pressure – you can move the filler or change the shape if you rub, massage, or lay on the area. You want to avoid touching the treatment area for at least 12 hours.
Take It Easy for the Day
You do not need to be on bed rest after cosmetic injections, but it is a good idea to take it easy. Performing a strenuous workout after injections is a bad idea – sweating and heat on the face could impact your injections. Go about your normal routine but avoid anything that will make you break out in a sweat, including sun exposure.
Keep Your Head Elevated
You do not want blood rushing to your face from exercise or an inverted head after cosmetic injections. For the first 24 hours, try to sleep and lay with your head elevated and avoid any movements that invert your head. This can help reduce bruising and swelling at the injection sites.
Hydrate and Moisturize
There are many good reasons to stay hydrated, but maintaining your injection results is another one to add to the list. Skin needs plenty of water to look its best, and many fillers need that water for the added volume. Not only should you hydrate on the inside, but you also want to hydrate and moisturize the skin from the outside – just do not rub moisturizer onto the injection area for at least 12 hours.
Choose the Right Injector
All the above are great tips but the most important tip is to choose the right injector. Many people offer Botox and filler injections, but not all have the same education and experience. Facial plastic surgeons are your best choice when it comes to performing cosmetic injectables, as they understand the mechanics and aesthetics of facial features. Maurice M. Khosh, MD, FACS is a dual board-certified facial plastic surgeon with extensive experience providing excellent results from cosmetic injections and a wide range of facial cosmetic procedures.
