Manhattan Radiesse and Manhattan Sculptra

In Manhattan Sculptra and Radiesse are two products that have received FDA approval for injection into the face. Radiesse is a calcium-based gel, which was approved for injection into the nasolabial folds (the fold of skin between the nostril and the corner of the mouth. Injections are performed after the area is anesthetized. Injection of Radiesse into other parts of the body such as the nose, chin, or cheeks is considered an off label use of the material. Following the procedure, patients can apply makeup and return to work immediately. Manhattan Radiesse injections usually last for one year inside the body.

Poly-L-Lactic acid is the main component of the dermal filler known as Sculptra. Sculptra is FDA approved for treatment of facial lines, wrinkles, and depressions. Sculptra should be injected into the soft tissues beneath the skin. Typically, the fullness from an injection diminishes in the first few days before the Sculptra attracts water and re-expands inside the tissues. Sculptra is injected as a series two to four treatments at six weeks apart. Studies have shown Sculptra to last up to two years.

Filler injections into the face are an effective, but temporary, method of removing wrinkles, depressions, or folds. Fat grafting is a more permanent method of facial augmentation. However, fat grafting is not a simple office procedure and requires a period of recuperation. Injections of Radiesse or Sculptra can be combined with other office procedures such as Botox Cosmetic injections to achieve what some have called "non-surgical facelift". Alternatives to Radiesse and Sculptra are Restylane and Juvederm, which belong to a category of fillers, knows as Hyaluronic acid.
