Lip Reconstruction

The lips are one of the most expressive parts of the face. Happiness, sorrow, and all emotions in between are expressed by the lips. The lips also serve the important function of sealing the oral cavity while eating or drinking.  As such, lip reconstruction of lip defects must repair both function and form.

When the lip defect affects the skin only, adjacent skin transfer will allow repair of the deficit.  In cases where the red lip is lost or the defect extends into the oral cavity, the reconstructive process can be more challenging.

The following patient lost approximately 70% of her lower lip due to squamous cell carcinoma. This required a staged procedure where a segment of the upper lip was transferred to the lower lip. Despite a massive loss of the lip tissue, the patient has excellent form and function of both lips.
